Taking a pre-production course and a production capstone provides us with an exciting opportunity to get experience that could help us as professional game designers.
We work on our game twice a week in class – a room with rows of desks, computers and tablets. Since this isn't always conducive to discussion, there's lots of rolling around in desk chairs or sitting in groups on the floor. Each 'team' takes over a part of the classroom, but there is still a lot of interaction between team leaders. The blackboards are covered in diagrams or descriptions that are probably incomprehensible to anyone outside the class.
This process doesn't end when we leave. Every team does work on their own computers or tablets at home, or we spend a lot of time in the computer lab. We've got defined tasks to get done, yet many of us have added special touches to our work simply because we wanted to.
Since we all want to showcase a game that we are proud of and can use as a portfolio piece, we're in the interesting position of our homework also being a professional undertaking.
So now we really can't miss deadlines.
